Hey, welcome or welcome back to the new School of Marketing podcast. I am so grateful to you for tuning in. Before I dive in, I would love to pay my respects and acknowledgement to the Palawa people of Lutruwita who are the traditional owners of the land on which my business operates.
And I pay my respects to their elders, past and present.
Alrighty. The new School of Marketing podcast. I'm your host. I'm Bianca McKenzie and today we're actually going to talk about a topic that is vital for anyone that is navigating basically the world of digital marketing.
Really like most businesses these days, right, we all use some form of digital marketing.
So with 2025 well on its way, the digital world is pretty much evolving at breakneck speed. It's almost terrifying. And it's quite funny when my daughter brings up certain and I'm like, no, I didn't have that when I was a child.
So things have changed a lot, definitely.
And yeah, we constantly see new technologies, consumer behavior is changing. It's almost hard for me to think back to when I was little and you know, like, well, there was no devices, the computers kind of came out at some point, but not like we have the way we do things now.
And it's almost kind of like hard to think about the traditional marketing space.
But yeah, things are changing. We also see much tighter data privacy rules and that's, I think it's a good thing, but it is changing things for us.
So I want to talk about like trends, challenges, strategies that you need to know to stay ahead. But like also if you're doing certain things, you need to adapt really.
And whether you have been in the marketing space for a while or in the business space marketing your business for a while, or maybe you're just starting out, I'm going to promise you that you'll come away with actionable insights that can actually help you adapt and thrive in this ever changing environment.
Because I don't know if you feel like me sometimes and I've been doing this for a long time, but yeah, even I sometimes feel like, oh, can't keep up. There's another change.
What am I going to do now? How am I going to keep marketing my business, how am I going to attract leads, sell all of those things? So let's dive in because I'm here to help you and yeah, I really want to help.
So let's have a look.
So let's start by looking at the current state of the digital landscape as we are in 2025.
One of the biggest trends is the rise of AI and machine learning. Like we kind of saw it happen in last year, but it's well and truly embedded into our tapestry or whatever.
Woven into the tapestry. Whatever you say we're seeing, AI not only create content, but also provide hyper personalized customer insights. And those allow U.S. businesses to really tailor our messaging like never before.
At the same time, consumers are more aware about their data privacy.
So with the regulations tightening and platforms adjusting their policies, the way we collect and use data is changing.
And this shift is actually pushing us businesses and marketers to focus on first party data and become more transparent with our audiences.
Also, we still see new social platforms and evolving algorithms and that is changing how we reach our target markets. And it's not just about Facebook and Instagram anymore. There's a whole world of niche platforms and innovative formats that are emerging and that require our attention.
And those trends are reshaping marketing strategies across the board. But with every change comes opportunity. So let's look at that.
So let's look at some challenges and opportunities in this space. One big, big challenge is actually adapting to evolving consumer behaviors. And it's really hard to predict those kind of things.
So today's customers expect more personalized and authentic experiences.
They want brands to actually know them, but they also demand that their privacy is respected. It's a tricky one, isn't it? So this means that our marketing strategies need to be balancing between personalization and compliance.
And one way to do that is using first party data and transparent communication. Like, you can build connections, but you need to tell people what you're doing with their data, how you're going to use it, how you're going to be in touch with them.
Just be transparent. Like just tell them, look, we collect this so we can do xyz.
Another challenge is basically volatile digital platforms.
And we've all seen it. Algorithms change, new platforms pop up, and what worked last year might not work today.
But with this volatile landscape comes an opportunity.
If you can stay agile and adapt and experiment with new channels, you can often find untapped audiences that are really keen to see fresh content. And it's a tricky one because sometimes there's that decision between do I adapt, do I go onto a new channel and you know, adapt quickly and risking basically putting all your time and effort into it and it not paying off, or do you wait, you know, sit it out, see if it takes off and then you step on.
It's literally that kind of thing. Because I have seen plenty of platforms come and go. Like, I don't know anyone still use Periscope?
Yeah, I can't think of a few, but I know there's a few other ones. So it's one of those things, do you invest in it and then potentially have it pay off massively or it could flop?
So many businesses are now using AI powered tools, not just for automation, but for real time customer insights. And that allows you for smarter targeting and better content creation. So it's all about turning these challenges into opportunities by being proactive and adaptable, but knowing the risks involved with all these different platforms that are popping up.
I mean, look at the United States where they banned TikTok. There's a lot of people that invested a lot of time and resources building a brand on TikTok and for it to just be taken away.
So yeah, there's risks, there's challenges, there's opportunities and we just need to think about those and be aware of those and always have like I have other channels as well.
Don't just put all the eggs in one basket.
So how do you navigate this dynamic digital landscape in 2025?
Here's some strategies. Well, first, embrace AI.
Whether it's using AI to create content, to analyze customer behavior, to optimize your ad campaigns, using and leveraging the tools can really save you time and it also can give you deeper insights into your audience.
Second, optimize for privacy.
First, data strategies.
So with more of a focus on data protection, you need to look at building a robust first party data strategy.
So really encourage your customers to share their information in exchange for value, like exclusive content or personalized offers. Not a, it's not going to be like a mass data gathering exercise like it has been for a long time.
Third, build authentic relationships. At the end of the day, marketing is about people.
So engage with your audience through personalized messages, social media interactions and just quality content that tells your brand story. Because authenticity builds trust. And thinking back at how marketing used to be done, it was more of a natural evolution I guess, but people knew the people they were buying from because you would go to your local bakery, you would go to your local butcher, you would go to your local supermarket and there was really, that people focus still and nothing has changed in that aspect.
People still buy from people they trust. Like, if you didn't like your local butcher, you would, you know, drive or walk the 3km up the road to go to another one because that one was actually a nice person.
So really nothing changes there in terms of building trust and buying from the people that you resonate with and that you like. So fourth, diversify your marketing channels. I've already said this, but don't put all your eggs in one basket.
Explore new platforms, experiment with emerging formats, and just continuously test to see where your audience is most engaged. But really do not put all your eggs in one basket. You need to have a diversified strategy and finally, stay agile.
Keep learning. The digital landscape is constantly evolving.
So make it one of your habits to constantly review your strategies to stay updated with trends and be willing to pivot when necessary. Because there will be those times where you will need to pivot.
Think about all these people that lost TikTok. They had to pivot, they had to make a change.
And implementing those strategies will not only help you navigate the current landscape, but it will also set you up for success as new trends come on and you need to, like, make the changes with that.
So looking forward, what can we expect beyond 2025? Well, I can't predict the future, nobody can.
But a few trends seem to continue. So AI will become even more integrated into our daily marketing efforts and it'll be providing even more personalized personalization and efficiency.
Privacy will remain at the forefront, and I think that is something that will keep evolving in a way, in a way that we gather data, use data, and as new platforms continue to rise, the ability to, like, diversify and to adapt will be super important.
So the key takeaway for from this episode is that the future belongs to those who are willing to learn, who are willing to adapt and to innovate.
So stay curious, keep experimenting, and don't be afraid to, like, pivot.
You can change a strategy with, you know the landscape, how it changes. It doesn't mean that what you do now you have to do in like three years time. Things will keep changing.
So to wrap up, navigating the digital landscape in 2025 is all about embracing change.
It's about leveraging technology and really staying true to your brand's core values.
Focus on building authentic relationships. Use AI and use data responsibly, and keep diversifying your channels so that you can actually get in touch with the people that are your people, your audience, where they are.
