Hey. Welcome to the new School of Marketing podcast. I'm Bianca McKenzie, and this is the place where we break down marketing strategies that actually work without the overwhelm.

Before we dive in, I want to acknowledge the traditional owners of the land I live and work on, the Palawa people of Lutruwita. I pay my respects to the elders, past and present and acknowledge the deep connection they have to this land, culture and community.

Now let's dive in,

then. Make marketing work for you.

So if you've got a growing follower count, but your sales aren't growing with it,

or if people engage with your content but never actually inquire about working with you,

or maybe you're wondering why your 2,000 followers aren't actually translating into, you know, 2,000 potential customers.

This episode is going to explain exactly what's missing and how to fix it.

Today we're talking about the gap between followers and customers,

why it exists,

what it's costing you,

and the specific bridges you need to build to turn your audience into paying clients.

Because here's the truth.

Followers are not customers.

It's a shame, right?

But they are potential customers.

And without an intentional strategy to move them from one category to to the other,

they're going to be followers forever.

We don't want that.

Let's start by acknowledging what this gap actually looks like, because I see it constantly.

You've been working super hard on your marketing.

Your follower count is growing.

People are liking what you do. They're commenting on your posts.

Your engagement rate is solid, and you feel like you're doing everything right.

But when you launch an offer or you promote your services, or maybe, you know, you're open for enrollment,

you get crickets.

Maybe you know,

a handful of people inquire,

but a very few actually buy.

And you look at your analytics and you think, I have 2,000 followers.

If even 5% of them bought, that would be 100 customers. But where are they?

And here's what's happening.

You've built an audience, but you haven't actually built a customer journey.

Your followers consume your content, they enjoy it, and then they scroll on.

They've never been given a reason or a pathway to actually become customers.

There's a gap between where they are, which is, you know, a passive content consumer, and where you need them to be, which is an active, paying customer.

And that gap is costing you sales every single day.

Now let's talk about why this gap exists in the first place.

Reason number one is different mindsets, different intentions.

Someone following you for helpful tips. They're in a consumption mode.

Someone hiring you or buying from you is in investment mode. They are completely different mindsets.

Someone in consumption mode will think, I will take free value wherever I can find it, but someone in investment mode will think, I have a problem worth solving and I'm willing to pay to solve it.

Most of your followers are in consumption mode. They like your content, but they haven't shifted into investment mode. And they won't shift automatically just because you're posting something.

Reason number two is that they don't know what you sell.

You might think it's obvious what you do.

You're a business coach. It says so in your bio.

But your followers don't actually know what that means, what you specifically offer, who it's for, or how it works.

They follow you for the free content,

but they've never really thought about you as someone they could hire or buy from because you haven't clearly shown them their pathway.

Reason number three is no relationship beyond content consumption.

They see your posts in their feed.

They might like them, but there's no actual relationships. They don't feel connected to you. They don't trust you yet, maybe.

And they certainly don't feel ready to invest money with you.

A follow is not a relationship.

It's basically just a permission to appear in someone's feed.

Reason number four is no clear next step.

Even if someone is interested in working with you or buying from you,

what are they supposed to do next?

Your posts probably don't tell them.

And you might want to check your bio because if your bio link is generic,

there's no obvious pathway from being an interested follower to an actual paying customer.

So they're just going to stay followers indefinitely.

So the gap really exists.

Now we need to talk about the specific bridges you need to build to get people across it.

The first bridge you need to build is your email list.

This is the most important bridge.

Social media followers are rented.

I talk about this all the time. You are on rented land.

Email subscribers are owned.

And here's why it matters. When you post on social media,

the algorithm decides who sees it.

When you email your list, it goes directly into their inbox. It is way More visible in there.

Social media is for discovery,

email is for conversion.

People who join your email list,

they have literally signaled a higher interest than people who just follow you.

They're like, yep, I want to hear more from you, tell me more. And I want to work with you at some point possibly.

So how can you build this bridge?

Firstly,

create a valuable lead magnet that is going to solve a specific problem for your ideal customer.

Make it genuinely valuable, not just like a generic kind of checklist kind of thing.

Then what you want to do is you want to mention your lead magnet in your content and you want to do this regularly.

So you know, saying something like, you know, if you found this helpful, I've got a free.

And then whatever you have that goes much deeper, find the link in my bio.

Or if you use something like manychat, you can say comment and then whatever word and then you can automate. You know that sending that to them make signing up ridiculously easy.

One click from the bio to a landing page,

a simple form, and then deliver it immediately, like super simple.

Your goal is to get as many followers as possible onto your email list where you can actually build those deeper relationships.

Bridge number two that you want to build is the value demonstration bridge.

Your followers need to actually see that you can deliver results, not just, you know, share nice tips.

So you want to be sharing client results regularly.

You know, saying things like, oh, client. Sarah was stuck at 3k months. After 90 days working together, she hit 10k. Here's what we changed.

Literally demonstrating it. Show your methodology,

give people a peek into your framework or your approach,

but without giving away the whole implementation.

You want to share case studies,

walk them through before things, after things, like the problem, the solution, all of that. Make the transformation visible.

And then you can also use your own results as proof. Here's how I grew my email list from 200 to 2000 into 6 months using this strategy.

You really want to show people that you can do this. You want to help people see you as someone who delivers transformation, not just information.

Bridge number three is the problem awareness bridge.

Many of your followers don't even realize that they have a problem worth solving. I know that sounds crazy, but a lot of us are not problem aware.

Your content might have been, you know, making them feel good, but it's not really creating any urgency.

So how can you build this bridge?

By creating content that helps people recognize deeper problems.

You know, saying something like if you're working 50 plus hours but still feel behind the problem isn't time management. It's priorities.

Or maybe show them the cost of staying stuck. You know, saying something like, you know, every month you delay starting your email list is another month you're building on rented land that could disappear tomorrow.

I want you to make the invisible visible.

I want you to help people see patterns that they haven't noticed.

You know, say something like, if you're constantly attracting clients who haggle on price, that's a positioning problem, not a pricing problem.

Really help people see the actual problem.

You want to move people from. You know,

this is really nice content to I have a problem. I need to solve this problem kind of mode.

All right. Bridge number four, the trust and connection bridge.

People buy from people they know like and trust.

I know this.

I'm not the only one who says this. Like, I'm sure you've heard this and it is true.

Your content might be helpful, but that doesn't mean people feel connected to you.

So what you need to do is you need to share your story, your perspective, not just tips.

Why do you do what you do? What do you believe that others in your industry don't show behind the scenes. Let people see your process, your workspace, your real life.

Obviously, to a certain extent. Like, it's not just like a notice board and, you know, we share all your cat pictures. It has to be appropriate.

I want you to engage meaningfully, respond to comments,

have actual conversations,

and treat your followers like humans and not like numbers. They are people. It's literally like having a conversation online.

And be consistent over time.

Trust builds through repeated exposure.

Someone who's followed you for six months,

they're going to trust you more than someone who started following you yesterday.

You want to move from, you know, being that helpful stranger on the Internet to someone like that. They now feel that they know and they trust.

Video really helps with this as well.

Bridge number five is the clear invitation Bridge.

Even when people are ready to buy, they need a clear invitation and an easy path to say yes.

So you actually need to ask for the sale. I know that sounds crazy, but you need to ask for the sale.

You can say things like, you know, if you're struggling with, you know, and then insert your problem and ready to insert your outcome. Here's how I can help you.

Make your offers visible and make them understandable.

Don't assume that people know what you sell. You need to tell them explicitly. I know this is crazy and I know why it happens because we're so close to our own work that to us it's obvious.

But we need to, like we need to be so, so clear, but in a simple way.

It's like this saying, you know, like it needs to be understandable for a toddler.

So you want to create clear calls to action, you know, like DM me the word interested and I'll send you the details or click the link in my bio to book a free call or join the wait list at and then URL.

And you need to repeat your invitations. People need to see an offer seven to 10 times before taking action,

so don't mention it once and then assume that they saw it seven to 10 times.

So you want to be saying things in your socials, in your emails, in, I don't know, your podcast. Wherever you promote things is where you want to constantly tell people.

You want to remove all friction and all confusion from the buying process.

So now let's put these bridges together in a complete journey from follower to customer.

So the first stage is discovery, which is where they find you.

That could be through social media,

Google, a podcast,

through a referral,

through, you know, content.

And the goal of that is to get them to follow you, like that's discovery.

Then you want to have a bridge to stage two,

so you want to have a compelling bio that hints at transformation and regular valuable content.

And stage two is interest,

they follow you.

So we've now built a bridge between stage one and stage two and stage two again,

social media content where you might be sharing some educational things.

You build authority,

connection and then from there the goal is to get them on your list. So we now need to have a bridge from stage two where they follow you to getting on your email list.

So the bridge to stage three is your lead magnet,

having a clear lead magnet that is really valuable for your potential clients and offering them an easy sign up. And then so stage three is consideration.

So they're on your email list now this is where you will be emailing them.

So your email is your primary platform, you still have your social media as your secondary.

And what you can do with your emails is you can go deeper. So deeper education,

problem identification, showing social proof, sharing your methodology.

And the goal for this is to build trust and create desire for your solution.

Now we need to build a bridge to stage four and that's by sharing a welcome sequence. So they're on your list now and you really now you need to start priming them so you have a welcome sequence,

regular valuable emails and maybe occasional promotional email.

So stage four is conversation and that's where they reach out because you've been priming them.

So your primary platform will be email,

maybe DMs, if people are reaching out,

and maybe even a discovery call.

And you want to be sharing content that really shows that you understand their specific situation and also content that shows how you can help them.

Now,

your goal here is to move them towards a decision.

So now we need to build that bridge to stage five, which is, you know, when they buy.

So you need to share a clear sales process. We need to have a clear sales process.

You need to handle objections. And that could be either in emails, it could be in conversations, it could be on your sales pages.

And you need to make the buying process easy.

So now that we've got this bridge, they move into stage five,

which is where they become a customer.

Here you need to have systems in place like your payment system, enrollment system.

You really want this to be smooth onboarding.

And then you go into delivery.

And the goal here is to deliver the transformation and at the same time create advocates like make those people so happy that they actually become,

in a way, your salespeople.

So most business owners focus all of their energy on stage one and two, which is getting followers.

And then they wonder why they're not getting any sales. The bridges between the stages are where the magic happens.

You need to move them from one stage to the next stage.

And that happens with bridges. They're not just going to hop over into the next bucket by themselves.

So your content needs to intentionally move people through the stages and here's how you can do that.

So content for discovery, which is, you know, that attraction attracting followers.

You want to be sharing helpful tips and quick wins. You want to be sharing relatable content about common problems.

Also value first,

no asks.

Then you get your content for interest, which is your email list growth.

You might want to be sharing things like, you know, if you found this helpful, I got a free.

And then insert your lead magnet that goes deeper. Sign up. Da da da da da. You need to regularly mention your lead magnet and you need to demonstrate value so that they actually want more.

Then you get content for consideration, which is, you know, where you build your trust.

Here's where you go into problem identification. Remember I said that not many people actually know that they have a problem.

Talk about things like, you know, here's the real issue, da da da da da.

Because a lot of people don't know that they have a problem,

so you need to paint that picture.

Also, the type of content you could share here is your framework or your methodology,

just previews. Don't you know Give the whole thing away.

Share client results, transformations, behind the scenes, personal stories. This is like,

this is the content that builds trust and then the next piece is your conversion, which is where you're moving into the sales and the content you want to share. Here is clear descriptions of your offers.

You know, super important.

You want to handle all the objections. You know, like people will be going, oh, I don't have time, or like, you know, things like that. So handle the objections and then use urgency and scarcity where appropriate.

Most people need some of this kind of urgency scarcity. So whether you have a limited time bonus or early bird offer or something, people need a bit of that push and maybe just a direct invitation to work together.

So this is where you're really moving into that sale. Most people only create discovery content and interest content,

but you need all four types of content to move people through the journey.

So if you want to start bridging this gap,

like real quick, here's some things to do this week.

You can start by creating or updating your lead magnet and make it genuinely valuable and directly related to what you sell.

Also have a look at your last 10 posts. How many of those posts actually mention your email list, how many invited people to take the next step? So I want you to look at that and if there's not enough CTAs, add more CTAs, more calls to action.

Then this month I want you to set up or improve your welcome sequence.

Five to seven emails that build trust and that introduce your office.

And then also create two to three pieces of content that really demonstrate value, like client results,

maybe your methodology, case studies like really focus on that and and start asking for the sale more directly. Not in every post,

but I would say every third or fourth post that you share.

And then for this quarter,

I don't know, we're already into this quarter. But map out your complete customer journey. Where are the weak points?

Where can you strengthen those bridges?

Test your different lead magnets to see which ones actually attract buyers and which ones attract freebie seekers. I have a number of lead magnets. Some are actually paid lead magnets because sometimes people who already pay are actually willing to then pay more and have a look at your metrics to see where you can improve.

Because small strategic improvements to your bridges will dramatically increase your follower to customer conversion.

So that's a wrap.

We talked about how to bridge the gap between followers and customers because they're costing you sales.

So here's the key takeaway. Followers don't automatically become customers.

You need to build Intentional Bridges,

an email list.

Demonstrate value,

create problem awareness,

build trust,

and have clear invitations to work with you.

Otherwise they're going to just stay passive consumers.

So audit your customer journey, map out your path from follower to customer,

look at where the gaps are,

which bridge is the weakest,

and then pick one bridge to strengthen this month.

And if you want help building these bridges with, you know, templates for lead magnets,

email sequences, conversion content,
